§ 9-8.1601. General.

  • Every exterior and interior flight of stairs having more than four risers shall have a handrail on one side of the stair and every open portion of a stair, landing, balcony, porch, deck, ramp or other walking surface which is more than thirty (30) inches (762 mm) above the floor or grade below shall have guards. Repairs or alterations to handrails and guardrails shall be completed in accordance with the California Building Code. Existing handrails and guardrails shall be maintained in sound condition and good repair and be of sufficient strength and stability as to resist human impact loads.

    Exception:

    Guards shall not be required where exempted by the City of Modesto Building Code.
